The Tragedy of Karbala, a detailed account of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein according to a historical source common to both Sunnis and Shias
Introduction
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds. May prayer and salutations be upon the most noble of creatures, our Master, our beloved and our guide, Abou Al-Qassem Muhammad the Prophet, upon his holy and pure progeny, upon his chosen companions, and upon all the prophets and the righteous until the Day of Resurrection.
Peace be upon you, O Abou Abdillah (Imam Hussein). Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of God. Peace be upon you, O son of the Commander of the Faithful (Imam Ali), Master of the successors. Peace be upon you, O son of Fatima Al-Zahraa, Mistress of the women of the worlds.
Peace be upon you, O Abou Abdillah, and upon the souls that have dwelt in your sanctuary. May the peace of God be upon you, on my part, for as long as I remain and for as long as night and day succeed one another. May God not make this the last of my visits to you. Peace be upon Hussein, upon Ali son of Hussein, upon the children of Hussein, upon the companions of Hussein.
May peace be upon you, as well as the Mercy of God and His blessings.
Who is Imam Hussein and why commemorate his martyrdom?
Today, we are commemorating the Ashura of the Hegiran year 1448 at the sanctuary of the Master of Martyrs — the Lord of the martyrs of the Ummah [the Muslim community] — Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, may God the Most High be pleased with him, seeking the blessing of this sacred and venerable place. He is with us, present in these commemorations, not only in this place but in time and in all places, for he is the one who inspires, who builds, who founds, the one who has raised high this path, the path of the Resistance — praise be to God the Most High. To his pure soul and to the souls of all the martyrs throughout history, we offer the reward of the (recitation of the) blessed surah Al-Fatiha with prayer upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad. (Recitation)
This year we have proclaimed a slogan that we follow: “Hussein is our path.” What does this slogan mean? The path is clarity, it is what is evident. The obvious road is the clear road. Hussein is a clear path and road. And clarity means rectitude, certainty, light, radiance, guidance. That is why Hussein is our path and our straight way.
Who is Imam Hussein, may the peace of God the Most High be upon him? He is the son of the daughter of the Messenger of God, may prayer and peace be upon him and his family. He was born on the third day of Sha’ban, in the year 4 of the Hegira, and was martyred on the tenth day of Muharram of the year 61 of the Hegira, that is to say 1,387 Hegiran years ago. He was fifty-seven years old at the time of his martyrdom.
Here arises the question: you have been commemorating his memory for 1,387 Hegiran years — why? What is the story? We must know who he was and what happened.
He is an infallible Imam after the Messenger of God, may prayer and peace be upon him and his family — the Prophet — then the infallible Imam Ali, may the peace of God the Most High be upon him, then Hassan, then Hussein. He is the one of whom the Messenger of God, may prayer and peace be upon him and his family, said, concerning him and his brother: “Hassan and Hussein are the Masters of the youth of Paradise” — that is, at the highest and most exalted rank. The Imamate was transmitted to him by Imam Hassan, may peace be upon him, in the year 50 of the Hegira, which means he remained Imam for ten years before being martyred at Karbala. Such is the personality we are speaking of: an infallible Imam bearing the burden of command, he who is the Master of the youth of Paradise.
The factors that made him an immortal being are resounding factors in history, clear in history. I will mention four factors that account for the immortality of Hussein, may the peace of God the Most High be upon him, and his perpetuity, as well as this ongoing commemoration that we carry out in our lives, at the cultural, educational and spiritual levels, as well as at the practical, jihadist and everyday-life levels.
First factor: the event. Karbala is the greatest event in history, in which the Chief, the members of his Family and his companions are martyred in a decisive and well-known battle in history, namely Karbala. We have found no comparable event in all of human history. This event is the expression of sacrifice, devotion and offerings of blood on the path of God the Most High, for the elevation of the Ummah. This is not an ordinary event; this is not a killing: it is a martyrdom, a confirmation of the foundations of religion, a confrontation with truths that absolutely had to be established thereafter. So, first of all, the event is exceptional, unparalleled in history, which is why it is immortal.
Secondly: what was the purpose that led Imam Hussein, may the peace of God the Most High be upon him, to go to Karbala? The purpose: “I have not set out except to seek reform within the Ummah of my grandfather the Messenger of God. I want to enjoin what is good, forbid what is evil, and conduct myself according to the way of my grandfather (the Prophet) and my father Ali.” The purpose is reform; the purpose is the establishment of religion; the purpose is confronting injustice; the purpose is to overthrow the unjust and tyrannical ruler (Yazid son of Mu’awiya); the purpose is to carry this Ummah, in practical terms, in its political, social, economic and cultural life, toward the path of God, toward the clear path, toward the straight way. The purpose is great: it is the purpose of establishing justice on earth.
Thirdly: the effects that resulted from this event. Devastating effects in terms of offerings of blood, captivity (of the surviving women and children) and the events that took place; but this tragedy, which left its imprints on hearts, minds and souls, is a tragedy that sets heart and mind in motion, that provokes revolution and opens onto a life of dignity. It is reported from Imam Al-Sadiq (the 6th Imam of Twelver Shiism), may the peace of God the Most High be upon him, that the Prophet looked at Imam Hussein, may peace be upon him, as he approached, took him on his knees and said: “The murder of Hussein leaves in the hearts of believers an ardor that will never cool.” Some have considered this ardor to be an emotional and sentimental state that calls for tears and stops there. No! This ardor is the ardor of tears, the ardor of revolution, the ardor of responsibility, the ardor of transferring the event from the past to the present, and the ardor of mobilizing the Ummah through the love of Hussein, the family of Hussein, Muhammad, and the message of God the Most High — and taking action so that we fulfill our duty in order to discharge a part of the debt we owe for what Imam Hussein, may the peace of God the Most High be upon him, accomplished at Karbala. It is therefore an ardor that mobilizes and sets in motion, an ardor that crosses time to leave its imprints in every era.
Fourthly: we are in the presence of the highest model of that great leader who is Imam Hussein, may the peace of God the Most High be upon him. Has God the Most High not said in His precious Book: “We have certainly created man in the finest form”? (Quran, s. 95, v. 4) Such is the Creation of God. But who is qualified to express the finest form with the finest accomplishments? It is Hussein, who expressed the finest form and was the brilliant, influential and active model in all his actions, in all his life, in all his command, in all his relationships. We are in the presence of the highest model, which has been firmly established. “You have certainly in the Messenger of God an excellent model” (Quran, s. 33, v. 21) — and you have in Imam Hussein, may the peace of God the Most High be upon him, an excellent model.
These four factors — the event, the purpose, the results and the highest model — have made Hussein immortal. That is why Hussein is our path. And when we say that Hussein is our path, it means that Muhammad, may prayer and peace be upon him and his family, is our path, for Hussein comes from Muhammad. It means that Islam is our path, for it is the religion of God the Most High which teaches and educates us. Such is the highest model, such is the immortal model: we have chosen Hussein as our path.
The Agreement between Iran and the United States
The second point I will speak about this evening concerns the agreement reached between the United States and Iran.
First, we congratulate the Iranian people, the Resistance, the States and peoples of the region and the entire world who aspire to independence and freedom, for this great victory. And we thank the Islamic Republic of Iran for having linked (to the agreement) the Lebanese terrain — as a resistance and as a people — by the force of its readiness for sacrifice, compelling Israel to cease its aggression. Do not underestimate what was happening as a war against Iran. The objectives were to overthrow the Iranian regime [regime is not meant as derogatory, but as the opposite of chaos, as it also means “order” in Arabic] and to annihilate the life of dignity and honor in the Iran of the Revolution. That objective has fallen and the direction in which events seemed to be heading has changed. The arrogance of American tyranny has been broken and its colonial project for Iran has failed, thanks to the great sacrifices this people consented to, at their head the Guide, the martyred Imam, Sayed Khamenei, may God sanctify his noble soul, as well as all the cadres, the people and the officials who gave enormously, enormously, but who paid the price of independence and dignity, and God the Most High granted it to them.
Henceforth, the power of Iran is a respected power that has its say in the region and in the world, and the balance of forces will evolve in the best direction, in favor of the peoples of the region, by the Grace of God the Most High. They wanted one thing, and God wanted another. Thus, by the Grace of God, humanity will benefit from this decisive change accomplished by the Iran of Islam in the face of all tyranny and all rejection of God, at their head America and Israel.
The Israeli aggression aims to annex southern Lebanon
The third point is connected to Lebanon. The Resistance in Lebanon is facing Israeli aggression. All the indicators since 1948 reveal Israel’s objectives: it wants a powerless Lebanon in order to occupy and absorb it. And quite frankly, Netanyahu declared that he wants Greater Israel. There are people who neither see nor hear, and people who interpret things in such a way that the very author of those words would not have wanted them to be so interpreted. The realities on the ground indicate Israeli expansion. We are not talking about expansionist intentions; we are talking about expansion. We are not talking about aggressive intentions; we are talking about aggression. We are not talking about a criminal objective; we are talking about crimes. We are not talking about someone who would want to kill children and women as a future desire; we are talking about a butcher who acts with savagery and inhumanity, under international cover. What more do we need to understand and know that Israel has these intentions?
Their project in Lebanon is to finish off Hezbollah militarily, culturally, politically, socially and at the popular level — that is, to perpetrate a genocide, that is, the extermination of the existence of a broad segment of Lebanese society through killing, displacement or transfer to other places. Such is their plan, to facilitate their absorption of Lebanon. Let no one believe that, since they are targeting us, they will be safe — no! They need slaves. They are not satisfied with killing only those they kill: they want to enslave the region, and whoever does not obey them will eventually also be uprooted, sent elsewhere or killed.
The danger is existential. We are not fighting over a piece of land. We are not fighting against a small aggression. We are not fighting to settle a dispute. No! We are defending an existence, a life, a land, a future, children, sons, a line, a path. We have the right to defend ourselves, we must defend ourselves, and we do defend ourselves — praise be to God the Most High.
This Resistance that exists today, and the Resistance that existed before the creation of Hezbollah, are part of a continuity, a continuity that believes in Liberation and works toward Liberation. The question is always asked: “What have you accomplished? Tell us what you have done! You are resisting: how far will you get?” It is the permanent recurring question. We have shattered Israel’s project! We did not allow it to eliminate us. We did not allow it to control our land and settle on it. We did not allow it to realize the Greater Israel project. We have shattered the project! It is no small thing that this small group, present in this region, facing this arrogance that extends all the way to America and beyond, has managed to shatter this Israeli project. How great is this Resistance, how great are this people of the Resistance and these supporters of the Resistance who have paid the heavy tribute in confronting the most dangerous contemporary project against Lebanon! If we had not held out, Lebanon would have ceased to exist within a few years. If the Resistance and the people of the Resistance had not held on, it would not have been possible to save Lebanon. You see this legendary Resistance; pay no attention to the defeatists. My brothers, do not answer them. Sometimes, certain people are affected because this person or that speaks ill of us. Leave them. Frogs do not disturb our progress. You see the legendary Resistance; pay no attention to the defeatists.
How Hezbollah will expel the occupier
Fourthly: we call for making use of this decisive stage we are in, after the agreement (between Iran and the United States), around four pillars to achieve the expulsion of Israel:
First pillar: we are the strongest. Strong through the triad of strength: faith, will and capacity. Do not look only at the military dimension. Was it the military dimension that held? No: it was the dimension of faith that held, making one the equivalent of ten, of a hundred; making one missile the equivalent of ten, of a hundred; making one shell the equivalent of ten, of a hundred. Faith — this faith that gives determination. The will that does not break. You have seen the young (Hezbollah fighters): we could not hold some of them back from going to the front. Wounded a first time, a second, a third, a fourth, he returns to the front. In the hospital, having had both legs amputated, he seeks the best prosthetics and says: I want to go and face them again on the front. “What mujahideen!” They are endowed with a powerful will. As for capacity… My friends, have you not asked yourselves the question? They surrounded us from the air and erected barriers at all borders — by land, by sea and by air — and we cannot bring in those considerable pieces of equipment that could tip the balance, according to some. How did we succeed? There is a capacity. Capacity is knowledge; capacity is invention; capacity is taking simple means and making great means out of them; capacity is tactics; capacity is ingenuity; capacity is courage. Do you truly believe that the Israeli fights and stays on the ground? That (Israeli soldier), as soon as a shell arrives, he and his companions are seized with terror, he has a psychological crisis and needs treatment. As for us (Hezbollah fighter), a hundred shells fall above his head, he looks around, realizes he is still alive and carries on.
This Resistance has proven its presence. In any case, the numbers are there. During the operation “the chewed straw” [the name of the 105-day operation starting from March 2] the number of operations carried out by the Resistance in 105 days is 3,185 operations; the daily average of operations is 30, over 105 days. After April 16, when they announced a ceasefire, 17 operations per day (on average) during that ceasefire violated (daily) by Israel. Number of enemy vehicles targeted: 518 vehicles; number of aircraft targeted: 85 — the young men shot down 12 drones and 12 fixed-wing aircraft, hit a helicopter and drove back the others.
Every day, Lebanon avenges Hind Rajab and Gaza’s martyrdom
The losses — this is what has been announced (by Israel), but they are higher than that — the losses on the Israeli enemy’s side: 1,347 casualties. When one says 1,347, it is not useful to distinguish between killed and wounded, because their wounded is like a killed man, in that he leaves of his own accord, since he has no cause to defend. He is an occupier, he is a criminal: facing the owners of the land, he cannot bear the picture before his eyes. So we are the strongest: that is a very important factor upon which we must build. We are the land, the clay, the tree and the air. We are the vermillion blood. We are the sharp weapon. We are the valor on the battlefield. We are the people whose body was kneaded with the soil of the South and whose soul was kneaded by the Creator of the earth and the sky, and whose sons are tinged with the halo of the martyrs. We uproot and are not uprooted. Our life and our position will not end except at the appointed hour, and the appointed hour is in the hands of God the Most High. And we are promised a resounding victory: “If God gives you His help, none can vanquish you.” (Quran) That is what we are. Some appreciate it or do not, that is their business. “This is nonsensical, what are you thinking, what are you saying?” We do not only think: we are this way, we are on the ground. With this strength we confront, with this spirit we confront, with this faith, this will and this capacity we confront, and we are certain of victory so that Lebanon may recover its sovereignty over its land and its rights, and for the expulsion of Israel. That is the first pillar to be taken into account in this stage.
Second pillar: the ceiling of negotiations with the Israeli enemy is mutual security. There is no other ceiling. Any project below the ceiling of disarmament will not pass, for that is Israel’s recipe for taking everything and destroying the country. Are we going to negotiate in order to give the Israeli what he wants? What he did not obtain by war, he wants to obtain through politics? It is over: he tried his luck and failed, my brother. He is not the first to fail. Trump tried and failed. Pull yourselves together! Find another way! With us, you will not win; with us, you will get nowhere. By God, we will make you swallow the bitter disappointment. You want to continue? Continue — you will see.
I call for making use of the agreement of November 27, 2024, to achieve the five points:
- Ceasefire in the air, on land and at sea;
- Israel’s withdrawal from the entirety of Lebanese territory;
- Release of prisoners;
- Return of people to the last inch of Lebanon;
- Reconstruction.
Within the framework of these five points, the Lebanese army deploys exclusively south of the Litani River in accordance with the agreement, and also according to what may be agreed upon. There are no buffer zones or security zones for Israel, no yellow zones, no red zones, no green zones: Israel must withdraw, and will withdraw (from our lands).
Thirdly: I call on the Lebanese authorities and all those concerned to consolidate the narrative of Lebanese demands vis-à-vis the Israeli enemy, without linking these Lebanese demands to any internal matter whatsoever, and without accepting that Israel, through its own demands, interferes in our internal affairs. Everything that relates to the organization of our internal situation — whether the question of arms, the economic question, the national security strategy, the defense strategy, or anything that concerns our situation in Lebanon, up to and including the implementation of Resolution 1701 — all of this must be entirely excluded from negotiations. These are matters we will discuss internally. Thus, in any negotiation, the fundamental demand must be the recovery of Lebanon’s sovereignty, since Israel is the aggressor and has no business meddling in the way we organize our sovereignty internally and in the details of our internal life.
Fourthly: we call on the President of the Republic and the political authorities to assume their responsibility by rallying the ranks, by engaging in dialogue, by discussing calmly and by reaching agreements among ourselves, with the aim of expelling the enemy and recovering sovereignty. We are ready to cooperate: we have proven it through the implementation of the agreement of November 27; we facilitated the deployment of the Lebanese army in the South and we were the most disciplined for 15 months [Hezbollah did not retaliate against any of the thousands of Israeli violations, focusing on its consolidation before resuming combat on March 2, 2026, after the assassination of Sayyed Khamenei]. We are ready to cooperate: more than that, we must be a single hand in this decisive stage, under the heading of the Liberation of Lebanon by all appropriate means and of cooperation among ourselves. We advise stepping back from direct negotiations (with Israel) that have proven to be humiliating dictates imposed under fire, which contain nothing — nothing but concessions — and in which the American and the Israeli conspire against the Lebanese, oppress him, silence him, publish communiqués in his name and demand concessions from him. Stop them! Then we will be together. Imagine how beautiful it would be — and what could be more beautiful — to be a single hand to liberate our land and secure the future of our children.
May peace be upon Hussein, upon Ali son of Hussein, upon the children of Hussein, upon the companions of Hussein.
May peace and the Mercy of God and His blessings be upon you.

Hezbollah’s path is that of Imam Hussein
Today, we are going to speak about the concept of victory — the concept of victory with Hussein as the reference of our path —, for commemorating these great memories, these noble and honorable positions, and this gift of sacrifice and devotion, a gift that none preceded nor followed, a gift of blood and soul, a gift of everything a man possesses in his immersion into God the Most High and his obedience to His commandments.
Hussein is our path. How do we triumph with Hussein? And what is victory under the heading “Hussein is our path”? I am going to speak to you about five criteria that illustrate the meaning of victory from the conception “Hussein is our path.”
Firstly: the very fact that we have adopted “Hussein is our path” is a victory. Why? Because this authentic Islamic path is a victorious path, for it is the application of the commandments of God the Most High the Creator, in the interest of man. We build our life on obedience to God, on rectitude and noble virtues, on justice, sound upbringing and good deeds. It is therefore a pure and exemplary life. He who has the fortune to build the foundations of his life on the upright existence that comprises noble virtues, that means he has triumphed, for he has lived his life according to the divine rules that place man among the great when he properly applies divine law (sharia) in his life.
We, as Hezbollah in Lebanon, have believed in this project; we have believed that Hussein is our path, meaning that (the Prophet) Muhammad is our path, meaning that Islam is our path, meaning that the religion of God the Most High is our path. This faith has been reflected in our manner of acting: we educate our children in obedience (to God) and in noble virtues; we work as a group within our country; we cooperate with the political and confessional parties present inside the country, within the framework of the laws in force, which we respect and on the basis of which we act. We have committed ourselves to the Taef Agreement (of 1989) and to the Constitution, so that they constitute the regulating reference for all internal relations. On this basis, we have confined political disagreement within the framework of national unity, in the sense that opposition, allegiances and debate must not impair relations of cordiality. Our country — we must protect and preserve it. We have believed in the liberation of the land; we have created a Resistance; we have directed our arms against this enemy to drive him from this land, without those arms having any internal effect; and we have cooperated with those who share our vision in confronting the single enemy. Thus, you observe that the entire project carried by Hezbollah in Lebanon is placed under the slogan “Hussein is our path” — that is to say, the principles from which we set out, the ideas from which we set out, are patriotic, Islamic, human and moral ideas; they are the most elevated that can exist on the surface of the earth. And consequently, we express them through our behavior, our actions and our deeds. Since we accomplish these headings under the heading “Hussein is our path,” that means we are victorious (aided by God) at every step of our lives, that we are always victorious. Why? Because we act rightly, and he who acts rightly is victorious.
Secondly: the second criterion is the refusal of injustice. God the Most High created us free; even God the Almighty, the Creator who holds all things in His hands, said to man: “I will not impose upon you the choice you will make; ‘No compulsion in religion.’ (Quran)” What should I do, O my Lord? He said to him: “I have endowed you with an intellect; reflect with this intellect and choose what you will. I counsel you to be just and not unjust; I counsel you to be with God and not with Satan.” The choice belongs to man. We chose to refuse injustice, we chose to be free, we chose not to accept enslavement, occupation, subjection and tutelage. We refused the projects of others and the acceptance of occupation and foreign tutelage, and we confront all forms of cultural, political, educational and moral dependency. When the enemy confronts us with arms, we confront him with arms; when the enemy confronts us with soft war, we confront him with soft war; when he attempts to impose his will on us, we refuse and raise our voice with the available instruments that enable us to confront. Each time we refuse injustice, that means we are victorious. Every step by which we say no to American tutelage is a victory; every step by which we refuse Israeli occupation is a victory; every step by which we prevent anyone from compelling us to follow his deviant ideas is a victory. Thus, the refusal of injustice is a victory.
Thirdly: we fight (jihad) in the path of God the Most High to defend our principles, our life and the future of our generations. The very principle of the idea of jihad, in the path of (Imam) Hussein — may the salutations of God the Most High be upon him —, in the path of Islam, in the path of Muhammad, in the path of (Imam) Ali, the principle of the idea of jihad rests on the capacity of man to protect his rectitude and his choice.
By the soul and the One who harmoniously fashioned it; and then inspired it with its immorality, as well as its piety! He who purifies it has certainly succeeded. And he who corrupts it is certainly lost. [Quran, s. 91, v. 7-10]
He who succeeds, he who triumphs, is the one who succeeds in the jihad against the soul (that incites to evil), and he who succeeds and triumphs is the one who succeeds in the jihad against the enemy. Jihad is a constitutive element of victory; when we believe in jihad — the jihad against the soul and the jihad against the enemy — and when we act on this basis, that means we are victorious. As long as we carry out jihad, the jihad against the soul, we are victorious; as long as we carry out jihad against the enemy, we are victorious. How do we fight? Jihad takes multiple forms; jihad does not have a single form. “Whosoever among you sees an evil act, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; if he cannot, then with his heart — and that is the weakest degree of faith.” (hadith of the Prophet) Sometimes we are able to fight, sometimes we speak the word, sometimes we can do nothing and we refuse in our hearts; in all these cases, we are carrying out jihad, according to the circumstances, according to the given data. And thus, he who carries out jihad in whatever form, according to the circumstances in which he lives, that means he is victorious.
The confederates [Al-Ahzab] gathered at the time of the Prophet — may God bless him and his family — in Medina, wanting to bring down the nascent Islamic State; he fought them. But that same Prophet — may God bless him and his family —, in Mecca, when they were placing thorns in his path, killing his companions and committing truly abominable acts, he was patient, because the circumstances were not favorable for confronting those unbelievers who were aggressing him and his people. Thus, he carried out jihad through patience when jihad called for patience, and he carried out jihad through combat when jihad called for combat. And thus, the simple fact that a man adopts and believes in the project of jihad means that he has triumphed, and he is always victorious. Observe the Quranic expression that opens a horizon toward the distant; what does it say: “Permission has been given to those who are fought against, because they have been wronged — and indeed, God is Able to give them victory.” (Quran, s. 22, v. 39) That means one does not fight and take up arms without reason; no, but when there is aggression, it is natural. God the Almighty says to you: confront, because you are free, you are noble, you are powerful; God permits you to do so when the opportune moment comes.
Fourthly: we do not fear death — this is a constitutive element of victory. I want to ask you a question: why should we be afraid of death? Why should we believe that our fear keeps death away? Death is a term, a fixed term. “When their term arrives, they can neither delay it by an hour nor advance it.” (Quran, s. 7, v. 34) It is in the hands of God the Almighty. Truly, whether you go out or come in, whether you travel or return, whatever you do — there is a pleasant story that is told: one day, with one of the prophets, Azrael [the angel of death] was seated beside him; he looked at a man among those seated. This man grew agitated and said to the Prophet: “He looks at me a great deal; truly, I have begun to fear the intensity of his gaze.” He said to him: “Why?” He said: “I do not know, my heart beats with fear.” He said to him: “May God keep you.” Some time later, news spread that this man had died. There it came to the Prophet’s mind to question Azrael; he said to him: “This man was afraid of you and looked at you without knowing that you were Azrael. What happened?” He said: “I was surprised that he was still sitting there; I had to take his soul in China.” The man went to China and that is where Azrael took his soul. The fixed term has no connection to whether you are afraid or not; being afraid simply means that you are paralyzing your life.
We are a community that does not fear death. The Commander of the Faithful Ali — may peace be upon him — says: “The fixed term is a sufficient guardian.” When we do not fear death, that means we are always victorious in the face of him who threatens us with death. And the greatest thing the enemy possesses, what is it? The threat of killing you. We say to him: “Even if you tried to kill me, if my term has not come, you cannot kill me.” Thus, you neutralize his capacity to decide on the choice of death; you neutralize him, for death is not in his hands but in the hands of God the Most High. And the sharpest weapon of any enemy throughout history, what is it? The threat to kill. When you yourself judge that this death threat does not have this efficacy, does not have this value, and you take your measures — and as long as your term has not come, you take appropriate measures, and the enemy cannot reach you —, and if you have taken all possible measures or not and your term has come, you will die. Thus, the death with which the enemy threatens as a weapon is not a weapon; we nullify it, we break it. And I say to you: if today, as a Resistance, none of us remained, on the pretext that there is a death threat, and it turns out that the term of our lives is near, as far as we are concerned, since we are fulfilling our obligation, we will not fear death.
Imam Hussein — may the peace of God the Most High be upon him — was killed as a martyr, in the greatest martyrdom in history, and yet Hussein triumphed. Today, who commemorates him? For 1,400 years, who has commemorated Hussein? Who has been educated in his school? Humanity is educated in Hussein’s school. Where is (the instigator of his assassination) Yazid (son of Mu’awiya) the tyrant? In the dustbin of history, and of course in hell, and what a wretched outcome. Thus, we do not fear death, and he who does not fear death is always victorious.
The fifth criterion: no limits to sacrifice. It is not possible for someone to give only a part of himself, only a part of his possessions. Of course, there are people who give in this way, and may God assist them and reward them, by His Grace. But I am speaking of the criterion in which we believe, and which we consider to be the summit, the quintessence, the highest form. No limits to the sacrifice of self and of possessions. Look at the noble verse; God the Almighty says: come, let us conclude a transaction with you; do you love to be always winners, in this world and in the next? Yes, O my Lord, of course, what could be better than that? For us to always win, He says there is a transaction; if you conclude it, you will always be winners. “Indeed, God has purchased from the believers their persons and their possessions” — their persons and their possessions, not a part of their persons and a part of their possessions—, “in exchange for Paradise.” O my Lord, You buy from us; what must we do in return? He says: “They fight in the path of God, they kill and are killed.” You go and you confront; you may be killed in this world and you may kill. “Indeed, God has purchased from the believers their persons and their possessions in exchange for Paradise. They fight in the path of God, they kill and are killed. It is a true promise that He has taken upon Himself in the Torah, the Gospel and the Quran. And who is more faithful to his commitment than God? So rejoice in your transaction that you have concluded. And that is the immense success.” (Quran, s. 9, v. 111)
We therefore have five criteria; these five criteria are all criteria of victory: “Hussein is our path” is a criterion of victory; “the refusal of injustice” is a criterion of victory; “we fight to defend” is a criterion of victory; “we do not fear death” is a criterion of victory; “no limits to sacrifice” is a criterion of victory. When we combine in our position these five criteria, that means we are always victorious.
The defeatists deny all of Lebanon’s victories
Here arises the question: how can we convince others that we have triumphed? My brothers, let us be done with this story of convincing or not convincing others; the important thing is that we ourselves are convinced. We are convinced that we are victorious, and they say to us: no, you are not victorious. We triumph in 2006 and they say to us: you are not victorious. Do not go and interpret victory according to their rules, which is military supremacy; no. How many armies and States have had military supremacy without being able to exploit the victory! The interpretation of victory according to our own rules is the supremacy of constancy and steadfastness — that is the true victory. According to our own rules, the enemy is defeated because he has not defeated our rules, nor our souls, nor our convictions, nor our constancy, nor our steadfastness, nor the fact that we are present on the scene and endure all the difficulties and punishments. Therefore, do not concern yourselves with whether they are convinced of the victory or not. Some brothers sometimes say to me: “My master, how should we build the narrative of victory?” There is no need to build a narrative of victory; we are all victory, through our existence, our narrative, our work and our resistance, and they are all defeat. How do you want to convince this defeated person that he is victorious? The question is put to me: “Do you not count the enormous losses?” Yes, but we consider that these enormous losses are still lesser than capitulation and defeat. Look at history: when the partisans of Mukhtar Al-Thaqafi surrendered while he insisted on continuing, what was the result? Seven thousand people had their heads cut off and were killed after having been given pledges, after having been told that they would be protected. Look at the Sabra and Shatila massacre: when the Palestine Liberation Organization was no longer able to do anything and withdrew, three or four thousand children, women and men were massacred at Sabra and Shatila. And of course, in the world, there are many similar examples. If we are capable of holding out, why should we surrender? And if we possess all the factors of victory, why should we surrender? And if our perseverance shows that we can accomplish achievements, it is not right for us to surrender.
Now, they come with the media — and this strikes me — one says to the other: “What do you think, how should we confront the Israeli aggression?” The other responds: “Before you speak to me of Israeli aggression, tell me: is it not a shame that these people have seen their homes destroyed?” That means you are fed up with the destruction of homes. “Oh, what a great heart you have!” In truth, your heart is not great — “Your heart is false”; you do not want this project to triumph, you want to inflame the anger of the people so that the people turn against us? They will not turn against us, for these people follow the path of Hussein. The people of the path of Hussein do not answer the people of the path of Yazid — understand this and know it from the outset. And I hope that if someone comes and says to you: “Where have you triumphed?”, you will say to him: drop this subject and go and discuss other political questions, for you will reach no result (on this point).
This is an aggression, a manifest Israeli aggression. Why do you not fight? It is you who do not fight, and it is you who do not fulfill your obligation.
In any case, I invite you to retain a fundamental rule entitled “the rule of religious obligation” [al-taklif al-shar’i] — that is to say: what is our obligation? And this rule of religious obligation is in truth the key. It is not asked of you to triumph with the instruments, ideas and convictions of others; you are asked to triumph with the project of God the Almighty. In God’s project, the one who triumphs is the one who fulfills his obligation; as for the victory, it belongs to God the Almighty.
There are a few words I am going to recite to you, so that you may perceive the rule of obligation. What does God the Almighty say? “Fight them, God will chastise them at your hands, will cover them with shame, will grant you victory over them and will heal the breasts of a believing people.” (Quran, s. 9, v. 14) He says to you: fight; the result comes afterward.
Secondly: the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — says: “Victory accompanies patience, relief accompanies affliction, and indeed with hardship comes ease.” In other words, patience and endurance in the process of confrontation are part of the steps toward victory; you must be patient.
In Nahj Al-Balagha [The Path of Eloquence], the Commander of the Faithful Ali — may peace be upon him — says: “[War is a dispute: one day the enemy prevails over us, and another day we prevail over him, until] God saw our sincerity, and He sent down upon our enemy calamity and sent down upon us victory, so that Islam became firmly established.” There is an effort you must make, there are sacrifices you must offer, and then the result comes, by the Grace of God.
Imam Hussein — may peace be upon him — what did he say? “I see in death nothing but happiness, and in life with the unjust nothing but repulsion.” Why? Because he is fulfilling his obligation; that is his obligation. He was killed in the path of God; that is the victory for him.
Our Imam Al-Khomeini — may God sanctify his noble soul — says: “Rise up for God and revolt for God. If the uprising is divine, it is victorious; even if we are apparently defeated, we are victorious, and even if we are not defeated, we are also victorious, for we have acted for God the Most High.” That is the measure (of victory): the fulfillment of the obligation.
Our master, Sayed Hassan [Nasrallah], Master of the martyrs of this Ummah, that eminent, inspired, assisted and divinely guided leader, proclaimed it openly: “When we triumph, we triumph; when we fall as martyrs, we triumph.” He is the disciple of Imam Hussein — may peace be upon him —; he has immersed himself into him; he understands what these words mean.
Thus, retain it: we must fulfill our obligation, and victory has degrees in the eyes of God the Almighty. The degrees of victory usually differ according to the divine laws and divine assistance: sometimes one triumphs materially, sometimes one triumphs militarily, sometimes one triumphs through constancy in one’s position, sometimes one triumphs in that they have not extracted a position from him in exchange, sometimes one triumphs when a group falls as martyrs and the other group continues until fulfillment, sometimes one triumphs by having caused the [enemy’s] project to fail, etc. Victory takes many forms. But we are always victorious, by the Grace of God.
We may not see a brilliant and crushing material victory until the coming of Imam Al-Mahdi — may God hasten his Parousia — but we see degrees of victory that are being realized. Every day that we persist, we are victorious. God the Most High says: “And Our word has already been decreed for Our servants the messengers: they will certainly be the victorious, and Our armies will certainly be the triumphant.” (Quran, s. 37, v. 171–173)
I will tell you even more: he who lives victory is victorious. If you feel in your innermost self that you are victorious, you are truly victorious, even if mountains fall upon your head, because you are in the truth.
Preventing the enemy from achieving its objective is a victory. The fact that the blood of the martyrs sets alight the hearts of believers with the sense of responsibility to preserve the deposit (of the generations who completed the Liberation of Lebanon) — that is a victory. Do not debate with the slaves of the earthly world and those defeated in their innermost selves; those ones neither see victory nor will they ever see it. It is like a scanner: when you introduce something into it, it gives you the image; with these people, whatever is presented to them, everything appears as a defeat. Why ask them where the victory is! Leave them; their receptacle is defeat, their intellect is defeat, and they will die in their rancor, defeated. As for us, we are in permanent victory. I say to you: raise your head, you are a resistant, God is the Helper, no compromise. Raise your head, you are a resistant, God is the Helper, no compromise.
The American-Israeli plot to destroy the Resistance
Thirdly and finally, I wanted to mention to you what is happening with us, because in this tumult, this war and these international pressures, there is something that people have sometimes not been able to distinguish correctly. I say to you: we are going through the most dangerous phase of our lives in Lebanon, the most dangerous American-Israeli international conspiracy project, and what is most dangerous that can threaten our country, the future of our children and our ideas. I am going to mention the plan underway to you; what is this plan? Since we do not have much time, I will enumerate 12 points of the plan; with the Grace of God, the people who analyze and research will be able to reach a conclusion.
Firstly: this plan has as its objective to liquidate the Resistance and the people of the Resistance, and to annihilate its existence in Lebanon completely. How is this to be accomplished?
- The criminal Israeli war against Lebanon, which respects no constraint in the killing of civilians and children, in the destruction and perpetration of all the criminal atrocities in the world, in order to break the Resistance. They practiced it and had taken the decision for it.
- The retreat of the enemy and America from the agreement of November 27 (2024) after the fall of Syria, because they considered that the balance of forces had changed; they therefore did not accept to proceed according to the plan or agreement previously reached, concluded according to the balance of forces that existed at that time.
- They worked to make the political authority in Lebanon the façade and umbrella through which — in violation of the Constitution — it would accomplish all the abominable acts leading to confronting the Resistance and bringing it down, whatever results were required; but it is asked of the political authority to provide the political cover.

This infographic (re-translated from Arabic) circulates widely in Lebanon: it shows Vice President Vance expressing more sympathy for Lebanese civilians than the Prime Minister and the President of Lebanon, who justify the Israeli massacres through their constant attacks on Iran and Hezbollah…
- The closure of air, maritime and land borders to prevent the delivery of arms, technologies and everything that would be of a nature to strengthen the Resistance.
- Preventing reconstruction so that people remain dispersed and displaced, and so that the popular base of the Resistance turns against the Resistance.
- A hermetic financial blockade so as to prevent us from recovering and rebuilding.
- Incitement to discord [fitna] between the army and the Resistance; they worked a great deal on this, but thank God, the lucidity of the army and its commanders, in addition to the objective circumstances, prevented this discord from taking place.
- Pressure on Syria to intervene from the East and attempt to be, together with Israel from the South, a pincer; but thank God, the Syrian regime did not respond favorably.
- They worked toward a Sunni-Shia discord under the guise of protecting the position of the Prime Minister in the decisions he would take against the Resistance; but thank God, everyone was reasonable, this discord did not take place. I want to point out something here, since it is not an independent subject: the poison sprayers did not lead us to a discord between Shias and Christians. Their basic idea was to pit Sunnis against Shias, to pit the army against the Resistance, and for some who consider themselves the theorists of the future Lebanese State to be able to profit from it. According to certain reports that reached us, the Americans were reprimanding them and telling them: you are not doing anything; they would reply: no, our intervention would not be appropriate. I mentioned it incidentally because we are talking about discord, but they are not an independent and effective actor.
- The existence of an Arab international cover — on the part of certain States — that presses in all directions in favor of Israel against the Resistance, under various headings and in various forms.
- All the intelligence services in the world work against us, provide information, operate in different countries, try to mobilize their capabilities, ensure the media and political cover and exert pressure on the Lebanese State to encircle us.
- And this is the main direction: the United States directs this plan like a maestro in all its details and in all directions, and uses all the capacities available to it.
Such is the conspiracy that we are confronting. And note well: all of this, we know it; we monitor all of it; we know the behind-the-scenes of what they are doing; and God assists us in the steps that sometimes require patience, sometimes jihad, sometimes communication, sometimes politics, sometimes social presence, etc. We do what God gives us the means to do. But such is the plan — a vast and extremely dangerous plan.
We — what have we done? I will also enumerate 12 points:
- We have a solid objective and project entitled our right to defense and to the liberation of the land: this is a strength.
- We have reviewed the military structure and the method of management, drawing lessons from what happened during the Battle of the Mighty Ones [the war between Israel and Hezbollah from September to November 2024], so that it is adapted to the probable new battle.
- We have adjusted the methods of combat and elaborated the combat doctrine of the Resistance, in accordance with the lessons of experience and the current circumstances, by carrying out guerrilla operations and not occupying fixed positions.
- We have developed capabilities in adequate armaments and drones; all of this was put in place by the intellects of the mujahideen present among us.
- We have the highest level of valor among the mujahideen who aspire to martyrdom, which is the maximum level. The man who is a mujahid, the resistant among us, is something immense, immense — not to be found in history, not to be found in the present, not to be found even if one were to travel the entire earth, with this grandiose level of spirit of martyrdom that exists. That is the foundation, and moreover, everyone sees it.
- We worked to care for the social situation of our people to the extent of our capacity, to the extent of the resources, donations, canonical rights [khums] and support from Iran — all these things that, thank God, were available.
- We ensured the repair and rehousing of 300,000 families, while all this blockade was in place; this too relates to the protection of our environment and our society.
- We preserved the unity of the Resistance forces: the unity of the Amal movement and Hezbollah, and all honorable men are with us; each acted according to the capacities at his disposal, but the foundation is that we are one. Let no one play (at sowing discord) among us; they played a great deal and tried a great deal, and did not succeed, thank God.
- We drew up a long-term plan; we did not say: let us try to be patient a little, tomorrow it will be over — no, no, no, no. We have a long breath and we continue.
- We adopted ambiguity and silence in our preparation for the confrontation, and we still do so, so that the enemy does not know what we are doing. In any case, they were surprised by what happened, and all the analysts say something else (than what was anticipated on the enemy side).
- We made a Karbala-like decision (Karbala is the site of Imam Hussein’s martyrdom) — do you know what a Karbala-like decision means? It means there is no ceiling. And this Karbala-like decision is still in effect.
- We were patient where patience was required, and we fought where fighting was required. For fifteen months, our patience was a combat, and thereafter, on March 2 [2026], our combat became an [open] combat. And there is no going back to the pre-March 2 situation.
Conclusion
What is the conclusion of this rapid overview? Of course, it would require lengthy elaboration, but it is simply so that people know what is happening.
The Israeli project is now reduced to begging at its lowest level. The project of the liquidation of Hezbollah and the consolidation of the occupation has fallen, and the Israeli will withdraw to the last centimeter of our land. Be certain that the victory — in the sense that leads to the expulsion of the Israeli enemy from our land — will be realized, with the Grace of God the Most High.
Raise your head, you are a resistant, God is the Helper, no compromise.
May peace be upon you, O Abou Abdillah. May peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of God. May peace be upon Hussein, upon Ali son of Hussein, upon the children of Hussein, upon the companions of Hussein.
May peace be upon you, as well as the Mercy of God and His blessings.
